Vidya Balan, née le 1er Janvier 1982 a Palakkad, est une actrice indienne vivant a Mumbai.
Mi malayali, mi tamoule, Vidya Balan a grandi a Mumbai, est allée au collège St. Xavier's puis a l'université de Mumbai. Elle obtenu un diplôme de sociologie. Elle parle plusieurs langues comprenant le Tamoul, l'anglais, le Hindi, le Malayalam, et le Bengali.
Vidya Balan a commencé sa carrière d'actrice dans un film Malayalam “Chakram, paired against Mohanlal”.Cependant, le film a été abandonné à mi-chemin par la production. Vidya se tourna ensuite vers la publicité, la plupart du temps dirigé par Pradeep Sarkar.
Ceci fut alors suivi de plusieurs petit boulot souvent temporaires ou dans des vidéos. Vidya a également joué dans des pièces de théâtres hindi comme Hum Paanch et a aussi fait son entrée dans le cinema bengali avec le film Bhaalo Theko pour lequel elle a gagné l'award Anand Lok Puraskar de la meilleure actrice a Kolkata. Elle a aussi fait des pubs qui furent le tour du monde avec la chanson de Shaan Tanha Dil.
En 2005, Vidya débute dans son premier film hindi Parineeta, un film de Vidhu Vinod Chopra dirigé pas Praadeep Sarkar. Le film fit un succès auprès des critiques et obtenu donc beaucoup de pub. Avec ce succès, Vidya reçu plusieurs offre de rôle, surtout de grands directeurs notamment Mani Ratman.
En 2006 elle travaille une fois de plus pour la maison Chopra avec Sanjay Dutt dans le film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Le film fut un super hit en Inde et fut classé #1 au box office pendant 8 semaines après sa sortie.
Vidya sera prochainement vu dans Guru de Mani Ratman ou elle joue le rôle d'une handicapée. Elle jouera aussi une prof de danse pleine d'énergie dans Chandramukhi de Priyadarshan, un remake d'un hit Malayalan « Manichitrathazhu »
Le prochain film de Vidya, après Guru, est Salaam-e-ishq, ou elle joue en couple avec John Abraham et ensuite Eklavya de Vidhu Vinod Chopra dans lequel elle joue face a Saif Ali Khan. Il y a aussi Halla Bol de Rajkumar Santoshi ou elle joue face a Ajay Devgan et, pour finir, Hey Baby de Sajid Khan ou elle joue avec Riteish Deshmukh et Akshay Kumar.
